MATEKITE PRINT
Matekite refers to those with the spiritual gift of perceiving and communicating with the departed.
It is understood as a form of mediumship, the ability to sense, receive, and interpret messages from those who have passed beyond the physical world.
In this role, the Matekite acts as a bridge between Te Ao Mārama (the world of light) and the ancestral realms, holding connection between the living and those who have returned to spirit.
Through them, relationship does not end with death, it continues in another form.
Matekite represents spiritual perception, ancestral communication, intuitive knowing, energetic sensitivity, and the continuity of consciousness.
It is with understanding that death is not an ending, but a transition of form and presence.
Within te ao Māori, Matekite is understood as a person who can perceive and communicate with wairua who have passed on. These experiences may come through dreams, visions, bodily sensations, intuitive knowing, symbolic messages, or presence felt in te taiao (the natural world).
This connection is held with care, grounding, and respect, often supported through karakia and spiritual practice.
Matekite are also understood to be sensitive to imbalance in wairua, sometimes perceiving signs of illness, emotional disturbance, or spiritual disconnection within individuals or environments. This teaches that the unseen world is not distant, but close, accessible through dreams, intuition, signs, and felt presence.
Through Matekitetanga, we are reminded that connection continues beyond physical separation.
