MATARIKI PRINT
Matariki is the sacred star cluster also known as the Pleiades in Western astronomy. In Te Ao Māori, her rising in the winter sky marks a time of reflection, remembrance, and renewal.
She signals the start of a new cycle in the Maramataka (Māori lunar calendar), where communities come together to honour those who have passed, give thanks for the present, and set intentions for the year ahead.
Matariki represents connection between past, present, and future, held together in the night sky.
Matariki represents remembrance, gratitude, unity, guidance, hope, and new beginnings.
She is the sacred moment where endings and beginnings meet, where reflection becomes intention, and memory becomes direction.
In Māori tradition, Matariki is the rising of a star cluster that appears in the winter sky, marking the Māori New Year. Its appearance is a significant cultural event observed through ceremony, storytelling, gathering, and reflection.
Historically, different iwi (tribes) hold their own unique interpretations and traditions surrounding Matariki, but it is widely recognised as a time for remembrance of ancestors, celebration of life, and planning for the future.
The name Matariki is often understood as:
Mata — eyes, vision
Ariki — sacred, chiefly, divine presence
She can be understood as “The Sacred Eyes of the Heavens.”
Her presence reminds us that we are guided by those who came before us, supported by the present, and always moving toward the future.
Matariki reminds us to pause, honour our journey, and realign with what truly matters, while remembering we are always part of something greater, both earthly and celestial.
