HINENUITEPŌ RAROHENGA PRINT
Hine-nui-te-pō is a powerful atua wāhine in Māori cosmology, known as the guardian of Rarohenga and the sacred threshold between worlds. She holds the space of transition between physical life and the spiritual realm, guiding the journey of the soul as it returns to its ancestral source.
She is not feared, but honoured as a compassionate guardian of return — the presence that receives, holds, and transforms life as it moves through the cycle of existence.
Through her, death is understood not as an ending, but as continuation in another form.
Hine-nui-te-pō represents transition, acceptance, release, spiritual continuity, ancestral connection, and the sacred nature of endings.
She is the great feminine presence of the threshold, where life transforms and returns to its source.
In Māori tradition, Hine-nui-te-pō was once Hine-tītama, who lived in the world of light until she discovered the truth of her origins. This moment of deep revelation became a profound awakening that transformed her understanding of self and existence.
Following this shift, she descends into Te Pō and becomes Hine-nui-te-pō, the great guardian of night and transition.
In this role, she holds space for the return of spirits to Rarohenga, guiding them through the passage of her vagina from physical life back into the ancestral realms.
She teaches us that all things are part of one continuous unfolding, where energy is never lost, only transformed.
Within her presence, endings are not final, but passages back into the wider field of existence.
