Hine-te-iwaiwa — Moon Cycles & Sacred Feminine Rhythm
Beyond childbirth and weaving, Hine-te-iwaiwa is also deeply connected to the moon, feminine cycles, intuition, and the sacred rhythms of time within te ao Māori. She is often associated with Maramataka — the Māori lunar calendar — or The Lunar Time Keeping System, which follows the phases and energies of the moon to guide: rest, planting, harvesting, fishing, ceremony, emotional wellbeing, and spiritual alignment.
In this aspect, Hine-te-iwaiwa represents the feminine intelligence woven through natural cycles and cosmic timing.
The moon in Māori understanding is not simply an object in the sky, it is a living force influencing: tides, waters, seasons, emotions, fertility, energy, and consciousness.
Because wāhine naturally move through cyclical rhythms, Hine-te-iwaiwa became deeply connected to feminine lunar wisdom, teaching women to live in harmony with their own energetic phases rather than against them. She reminds us that life is cyclical, not linear.
Within Maramataka, different moon phases carry different energies and purposes. Some nights are considered highly abundant and energetically powerful, while others are better suited for: stillness, reflection, planning, healing, or rest.
This ancient system reflects a profound understanding that humans are interconnected with celestial rhythms and environmental energy.
Modern science now confirms many ways the moon and natural cycles influence life on Earth: ocean tides, circadian rhythms, sleep quality, hormonal patterns, reproductive cycles, and emotional regulation. Research also shows that living in alignment with natural rhythms, including sleep cycles, sunlight exposure, rest, and hormonal changes, significantly supports nervous system health and overall wellbeing.
For many wāhine, the menstrual cycle can be understood as mirroring the phases of the moon and the rhythms of Hine-te-iwaiwa through four energetic stages:
- Menstrual Phase (Bleeding / New Moon) — rest, release, reflection, cycle completion, inward energy, emotional processing, renewal
- Follicular Phase (Waxing Moon) — growth, inspiration, creativity, new beginnings, fresh energy, openness
- Ovulation Phase (Full Moon) — expression, visibility, connection, communication, radiance, abundance, outward energy
- Luteal Phase (Waning Moon) — slowing down, intuition, discernment, emotional awareness, preparation for release and transformation
Just as the moon shifts through darkness, fullness, release, and renewal, so do we!
