Io Matua Kore — The Supreme Being

Within mātauranga Māori (Māori world view), Te Kore is the sacred void, the realm of infinite potential where creation begins. But beyond even Te Kore exists a deeper spiritual presence known as Io Matua Kore.

Io Matua Kore is understood by many Māori traditions as the supreme source of consciousness, the eternal intelligence from which all existence flows. While Te Kore is the field of potential, Io is often seen as the consciousness that exists within and beyond that field. Not all iwi (tribes) share the same teachings about Io, and historically some traditions kept this knowledge sacred within whare wānanga (houses of higher learning). Yet across many teachings, Io Matua Kore represents the highest spiritual essence: the origin beyond all form, separation, and limitation. 

The name itself carries deep spiritual meaning:

• Io — often understood as the supreme being, source consciousness, or divine essence
• Matua — parent, source, origin, elder
• Kore — beyond limitation, without form, the void, limitless potential

Together, Io Matua Kore can be interpreted as: 

Unlike human depictions of “God,” Io is not typically imagined as a person sitting somewhere separate from creation. Io is often understood more as an all-encompassing consciousness, present within everything and beyond everything simultaneously. Meaning Io is omnipresent.

One of the biggest differences between Indigenous spiritual understandings and many Western religious systems is that divine consciousness is not always confined to gender.

Some teachings may refer to Io using masculine language due to translation and colonial influence, but Māori cosmology itself is deeply rooted in balance and polarity. Masculine and feminine energies exist together throughout creation, Ranginui and Papatūānuku, Te Ao Mārama and Te Pō, movement and stillness. Io is not limited to human identity. It is spirit, source, intelligence, and life force itself.

Quantum science now suggests that all things are interconnected through invisible energetic fields. Consciousness itself may play a role in shaping reality. Indigenous knowledge systems have long understood this interconnectedness and that life is relational, spiritual, and alive with mauri (life force).

Io can therefore be understood not as a distant god outside creation, but as the consciousness woven through all living things.
